My areas of teaching and research include Canadian and Asian North American literature, multi-ethnic and mixed race studies, and the intersections of writing, photography, and film. My first book explores the politics of interpretation and ideologies of postmodernism: Postmodern Canadian Fiction and the Rhetoric of Authority (McGill-Queen’s UP). I have published essays on representations of race relations in the media, literary maps of urban space, representations of culinary desire, and visual culture studies. Recent book chapters include “Phototextual Remembering in Janice Wong’s Chow: From China to Canada: Memories of Food + Family,” in Canadian Culinary Imaginations, edited by Shelley Boyd and Dorothy Barenscott (McGill-Queen’s UP, 2020), and “Pacific Spectacles:  Vancouver and the Social Production of the “View Imperative,” in Shifting Grounds: Cultural Tectonics along the Pacific Rim, edited by Jutta Ernst and Brigitte Glaser (Winter Verlag, 2020). With Chris Lee and Marissa Largo, I edited a special issue of Asian Diasporic Visual Cultures and the Americas: Beyond Canada 150: Asian Canadian Visual Cultures (Vol. 4, Nos. 1-2, Spring 2018).

I have served on the awards juries of the British Columbia Arts Council, the City of Vancouver Book Award, and the Asian Canadian Writer’s Workshop.

In 2012 I received a University Killam Teaching Prize and I am currently Associate Head, Curriculum, and an Associate Editor for Canadian Literature.
