Second-year prerequisites (6 credits) ENGL 210 and 211

ENGL 220 and ONE of 221, 222, 223, 224, 231
ENGL 220 or ENGL 229
 Completing the Honours Program (48 credits)

At least one course from each of the following areas (minimum 9 credits):

1. Old and Middle English Studies: 343,344, 346, 356
2. Sixteenth-Century Studies: 347, 348
3. Seventeenth-Century Studies: 349, 354, 376

12 credits of Language

3 cr. History of English (318, 319, 340) NB: 343 OE Lit is not a language course

AND

3 cr. Structure of English (330, 331, 312, 322, 328)

AND

3 cr. Rhetoric (307-311)

AND

3 cr. additional (307-340)

At least one course from two of the following areas (minimum 6 credits), one of which must be in Canadian Literature unless that requirement has already been met in the second year:

1. Eighteenth-Century Studies: 357, 358
2. Nineteenth-Century Studies: 359, 362, 364, 369
3. Twentieth-Century Studies: 462, 464, 466, 470, 472, 474, 476, 478, 480

12 credits of Literature

6 credits early period (343, 344, 346-354)

AND

6 credits modern (358-369, 462-466, 474, 478)

At least 3 credits of language or rhetoric
from ENGL 307-340.

Four seminars, ENGL 491 & 492 (total 12 credits)

These may be taken at any time and in any order, but must include at least 3 credits of ENGL 491 and at least 3 credits of ENGL 492.

ENGL 499, Honours Essay (3 or 6 credits).
ENGL 499 is best taken in the final year.

Four seminars (total 12 credits)

Language: ENGL 489 (Language Majors seminar) and/or graduate seminar on Language (with permission.)

Literature: ENGL 491 & 492

ENGL 499, Honours Essay (3 or 6 credits)

15 credits of upper-level English electives (ENGL 304 and higher.)
Honours students are strongly encouraged to take ENGL 409, “Modern Critical Theories.”
6 -9 credits of upper-level English electives (ENGL 304 and higher.)
