Pilot Combined Literature and Language Program

Previously, the Honours program has focused on English literature. We are delighted to announce the start of a pilot program for the combined study of English literature and language.  Please see the details below. Students undertaking the combined program will receive a degree in Honours English.

All students must complete a total of 48 credits:
12 credits of language
12 credits of literature
3 to 6 credits for thesis
12 credits of seminars
6 to 9 credits optional (ENGL 409 is strongly encouraged)

12 credits of seminars:

  • Language: ENGL 489 and/or graduate seminar on language (with permission)
  • Literature: ENGL 491, 492

12 credits of literature:

  • 6 credits early period  (ENGL 343, 344, 346-354)
  • 6 credits Modern  (ENGL 358-369, 462-466, 474, 478)

12 credits of language:

  • 3 history of English (ENGL 318, 319, 340 [NB: ENGL 343 is not a language course])
  • 3 structure of English (ENGL 330, 331, 312, 322, 328)
  • 3 rhetoric (ENGL 307-311)
  • 3 additional (ENGL 307-340)
