The UBC Engl ish Graduate Student Caucus\, with the support of the Department of English Language & Literatures\, is pleased to invite you to "New / Experimental / Digital Media\," as part of the 2024/2025 Critical Conversations series. On Friday\, March 14\, join us for a critical conversation between Dr. Danielle Wong\, Dr. Kevin McNeilly\, and Dr. Adam Frank.
Crit ical Conversations is a faculty research series organized by both the UBC Department of English Language and Literatures and the UBC English Graduate Student Caucus. The e vents aim to foster interdisciplinary dialogue across fields and periodizat ion between students\, faculty\, and the larger university community. These events\, which occur a handful of times over the course of the academic ye ar\, feature brief talks by speakers on a critical topic informed by their wide-ranging research expertise and interests.

Danielle Wong (she/her/hers) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English Language and Literatures at the Uni versity of British Columbia\, where she is also a faculty affiliate of the Asian Ca nadian and Asian Migration Studies Program. Her research focuses on the analysis of race\, empire\, capitalism\, and “new” technologies. Her first book\, Racial Virtuality: Asianness\, New Media\, and Information Capi talism\, is forthcoming with New York University Press. Her other scho larly work can be found in publications including Representations\ , Transformations\, Post-45\, and Theatre Research in Canada. Prior to joining the University of British Columbia\, she was a Postdoctoral Associate in the Asian American Studies Program at Cornell University.
Kevin M cNeilly’s pedagogical interests have involved convergences of literary stud ies\, critical digital humanities\, and media studies. He has been associat ed for the past decade with two major research initiatives around improvisa tion and social aesthetics: Improvisation\, Community and Social Practice ( 2007-2014) and the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvis ation (2014-present). His own work in this field has centred on investigati ng the intersections of music\, text and media. He has published critical w ork on television drama and has been developing a critical project on inter mediality and the poetics of listening. He maintains two blogs on poetry\, music and improvisation: frankstyles.blogspot.ca and flowfissuremesh.com. H is own poetry and creative work can be found through his website\, kevinmcn eilly.ca.
Adam Frank’s re search and teaching areas include affect theory and poetics in US literatur e and culture. His essays have appeared in ELH\, Criticism\, Critical Inquiry\, Science in Context\, Textual P ractice\, and elsewhere. He is the author of Radio Free Stein: Ger trude Stein’s Parlor Plays (Northwestern University Press\, 2025) and Transferential Poetics\, from Poe to Warhol (Fordham University Pr ess\, 2015)\, and co-author (with Elizabeth Wilson) of A Silvan Tomkins Handbook (University of Minnesota Press\, 2020). He has produced a do zen recorded audiodramas in collaboration with composers locally\, national ly\, and internationally.
