Language Proficiency Index Test

For ENGL 112: You only need to take the LPI once, or maybe not at all. Learn more.

If you choose to meet the First-year English Course Entry Requirement by taking the LPI Test, here is what you need to know:

Similar to a challenge test, the LPI assesses a student’s readiness to pursue academic work in critical reading and writing at a university level.

The LPI is administered by Paragon Testing Enterprise at UBC. Please visit for more information or to register for an upcoming examination date. The LPI Office is located at #110 – 2925 Virtual Way (by the Renfrew Skytrain Station) in Vancouver, BC. They can be reached at

To meet the First-year English Course Entry Requirement though the LPI, you will need to complete all sections of the LPI and achieve a minimum score of Level 5 (30/40) on the essay section. We encourage you to write the examination as early as possible and to check with your Faculty Advising Office to determine if they have an earlier LPI deadline in place. In order for the First-Year English Office to access your LPI result, it is essential that you select UBC as a receiving institution on your LPI test paper. You must register for an LPI test at least 6 days prior to a test sitting.

If you have not met the First-year English Course Entry Requirement, and you have not been able to achieve a Level 5 on the LPI, we strongly advise you to enroll in one of the non-credit writing courses–Writing 098/099–offered by UBC’s Extended Learning.

Please note: The First-Year English Office cannot give out information on LPI scores. If you have any questions regarding your results, please contact Paragon Testing Enterprise directly for more information.
