Congratulations to Cody Brown for receiving UBC’s 2025-26 Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award for his exceptional teaching, which has made a meaningful impact and earned the admiration of students and supervisors alike.
“Being nominated for the Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award itself was an honor, but actually receiving it is humbling. Besides recognizing my years teaching and working in English at UBC, I take the award as affirmation of the time I have spent teaching and trying to do the best by my students. The Killam stands as an emblem of my commitment to teaching as I look forward to my continuing career as an educator.”
Cody Brown
PhD Student & Teaching Assistant
Department of English Language and Literatures
Guided by what he calls a “pedagogy of attention and rapport,” Cody has consistently fostered engaging classrooms that awaken students’ investment in critical analysis, confidence in their own perspectives, and active participation in meaningful scholarly dialogue. By bringing a sense of play to the classroom, he helps lessen the stakes of academic work and diffuse anxiety around written assignments. He has demonstrated teaching excellence across a diverse range of subjects—including political rhetoric and comics, adventure writing, environmental literary criticism, and media studies—as reflected in outstanding student evaluations across the board.
Cody has also been relied upon in roles of significant responsibility, including serving as a replacement instructor and teaching higher-level courses typically reserved for the most experienced teaching assistants (TAs). Beyond his own teaching, he has made lasting contributions as the department’s TA Mentor, leading pedagogy workshops on topics such as generative AI in the classroom, lesson planning, and marking. He has also supported TAs in navigating workplace issues, achieving work-life balance, and developing teaching best practices.
Please join us in congratulating Cody on being recognized for his remarkable contributions to the Department of English Language and Literatures.
