In 2018, in company with a network of universities from Japan to North Carolina, we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein with a marathon reading of the novel on Hallowe’en day. On October 31st, from 9:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m., participants will meet in Buchanan Tower Rm 323, 1873 East Mall, UBC, to read the original 1818 text of Frankenstein aloud. This was the preferred text of Shelley’s youth: the original version of this great speculative fiction/ horror/ gothic novel, before Shelley set out to edit it, and her family, into a prospective Victorian respectability in 1831 Participants will have three ten-minute opportunities to read from Shelley’s text. All are invited to come and enjoy fellow participants’ voices and some brief perspectives from our faculty members and graduate students.
