The Department of English Language and Literatures at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people. We are committed to an open, progressive, and innovative blending of research and pedagogy, while balancing theory and practice. We value playing a transformative role in the lives of our students and in our region.
Our diverse department offers courses and supervision in all major subfields of English language and literature, across historical and contemporary studies. Our research and teaching push the boundaries of the discipline, and intersect with fields such as environmental humanities, anti-racism studies, Black studies, Indigenous literatures and cultures, science and technology studies, media studies, and more.
The department is unique in Canada in offering distinct undergraduate programs and graduate degrees in all literatures in English, in English language, and combined literature and language study.
