First-Year English

REGISTRATION NOTE (18 JUNE): Students can register in either ENGL 112 or WRDS 150 to meet 3 credits of their Faculty’s communication requirement. If ENGL 112 is full, try to register in WRDS 150 as an alternative. Students outside of the Faculty of Arts can register directly into WRDS 150 sections numbered 600 and above.

First-year English is the gateway to brilliant courses across the centuries of English Literature and Language/Rhetoric, whether you are getting ready for an English Major or meeting a degree requirement. The Department of English Language and Literatures offers an exciting variety of first-year English courses in literature and writing, including special courses for students who think they might want to major in English (ENGL 100 and 120).

Most UBC faculties require students to take 3 or 6 credits of first-year English. Check your Faculty requirements before you register to be sure that you are taking the right course(s) for your program.
