First-Year English

For ENGL 112: You only need to take the LPI once, or maybe not at all. Learn more.

First-year English is the gateway to brilliant courses across the centuries of English Literature and Language/Rhetoric, whether you are getting ready for an English Major or meeting a degree requirement. The Department of English Language and Literatures offers an exciting variety of First-Year English courses in literature and writing, including special courses for students who think they might want to major in English (ENGL 100 and 120).

Most UBC faculties require students to take 3 or 6 credits of First-Year English, and some faculties require or strongly recommend ENGL 112 (Strategies for University Writing). Check your Faculty requirements before you register to be sure that you are taking the right course(s) for your program.

See the full list of our first-year courses.

NOTE: There is a minimum requirement to remain registered in First-Year English courses.
