Each year, the UBC Department of English Language & Literatures awards scholarships to top-performing students in our undergraduate courses and programs. Also known as Recommended Awards, these scholarships do not require an application; students are automatically considered for any scholarships, awards, or prizes for which they are eligible.

This scholarship is endowed by the family and friends of Mary Quan Lee, a 1945 UBC graduate who achieved outstanding academic accomplishments throughout her student years at UBC. This scholarship is awarded to the top ranking third-year student, entering fourth, on the recommendation of the Department of English Language & Literatures.
Established through the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Wallace Wilson, this annual scholarship is awarded to a student of high academic standing and with promise and distinction, nominated by the Department of English Language & Literatures. This scholarship is for students entering their third-year of the Honours English programme, based on the standing obtained in ENGL 210.
This scholarship has been made available annually through a gift from Arlene James in memory of her parents, Ralph (1923-2014) and Barbara James (1929-2020) for outstanding Bachelor of Arts students majoring in English Literature. Ralph was born in Vancouver, British Columbia and received a Bachelor of Commerce from UBC in 1947 after serving with the Canadian Army in World War II. He started his own business, Ralph's Auto Supply, in 1961. Barbara (née Fingard) was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and moved with her family to Vancouver at age sixteen. She took home economics classes at UBC, and enjoyed fishing, boating, and traveling. Ralph and Barbara were voracious readers, and this award was established in their memory to encourage students in their study of literature. The scholarship is made on the recommendation of the Department of English Language and Literatures, for an outstanding English Major.
This scholarship is offered in the memory of Clark MacLaughlin by Rosalind Dodge to a student in the Honours or Major programme in English with a concentration in Shakespearean studies. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of English Language and Literatures.
Scholarships have been endowed by a bequest from Gilean Joan Coldham Douglas for students in English Language and Literatures. This scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Department of English Language and Literatures for excellence in the study of English.

This scholarship is offered annually by friends, colleagues and former students in honour of Jerry Wasserman’s 44-year career as a Professor of English and Theatre at UBC. The scholarship is given to an undergraduate student in the third or fourth year majoring in English, Theatre, or both, who has demonstrated academic excellence as well as promise in the performing arts (through practical activities such as acting, directing, dance, design, scriptwriting, etc.). Preference is given to double majors in English and Theatre. The scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Department of English in even years, and the Department of Theatre and Film in odd years.
These scholarships have been made available by the late W. H. Maclnnes, and are awarded to students in the Faculty of Arts demonstrating excellence in a term 1 English course in their first year.
Two scholarships have been given by the Vancouver Chapter of the PEO Sisterhood in memory of the late Frances Milburn. These are offered annually to the two highest ranking women students entering third-year of the English Honours programme. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Honours Committee of The Department of English Language and Literatures.

This scholarship is awarded annually in honour of Professor Philip Akrigg, a distinguished Shakespearean scholar and a long-time member of the University of British Columbia’s Department of English Language & Literatures. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of English Language & Literatures to a third-year English honours or majors student in a Shakespeare course, assessed as most promising on the basis of term essays and the final examination.
This scholarship was established in honour of Professor Thorleif Larsen, a member of the English Department of The University of British Columbia from 1919 to 1958. It is awarded annually to the top student in ENGL 220.

The scholarship can be held for only one year and the successful student must attend the University of British Columbia while holding it.

The scholarship is awarded to a student of high academic standing and with promise of distinction, entering their final year of the English Majors programme. The award will be made on the recommendation of the Department of English Language & Literatures Committee on Prizes and Scholarships, after consultation with the Majors Committee.
