The Department of English Language and Literatures at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) invites applications for a senior appointment in Canadian Literature at the level of Associate or Full Professor with an anticipated start date as early as July 1, 2020. Candidates should possess expertise within the broader field of Canadian Literature; demonstrate an active engagement with the theories and methodologies currently informing the study of literature in Canada; and possess the skills and experience necessary to undertake the editorship of the flagship peer-reviewed journal Canadian Literature for an initial five-year term, subject to renewal upon successful review.
In 2019, Canadian Literature celebrated its 60th anniversary. Since its founding in 1959, it has thrived in a well-supported home in the Faculty of Arts at UBC. The journal is the top-ranked publication in the field and draws its contributors, referees, and readers from a global scholarly community. The journal is also a leader in the public humanities and community outreach (especially with CanLitGuides, the journal’s teaching and learning resource). Over the course of the next three years the journal is required to shift to an Open Access format to comply with SSHRC funding regulations. The Editor will lead the journal through this transition, and work with the rest of the journal’s editorial staff to explore new directions. The Editor will coordinate and oversee the work of the editorial team, collaborating with the managing editor, assistant and associate editors, and a team of student assistants to continue the publication of four issues per year. The Department of English Language and Literatures at UBC has a newly enhanced curriculum that features courses in the literatures and cultures of Canada (e.g., early, contemporary, transnational, Asian Canadian, Indigenous, African diasporic, migration, ecocritical). The Department also offers courses on anticolonial, decolonial and postcolonial studies, on rhetoric and language, and on media studies. This appointment may also contribute to a number of curricular and research initiatives in the Faculty of Arts, including the Canadian Studies program, the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies, Community-Engaged Learning, and the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice. Applicants must have a PhD and evidence of sustained scholarly work in the profession. Applicants are expected to provide strong evidence of active and excellent research; possess a strong publication record; and demonstrate a record of successful graduate supervision and high-quality teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. They should also provide clear evidence of editorial work. French language skills would be an asset. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of scholarly research, conduct effective undergraduate and graduate teaching and graduate supervision, contribute to service, and should be willing to be appointed as the Canadian Literature Editorship for an initial 5-year period (subject to renewal). Course release will be provided for the editorship. The successful candidate will teach some courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels as well as specialist courses.
