The Dean of Arts Award is awarded annually to a faculty member in recognition of exceptional and sustained contributions in two or more areas (educational leadership; teaching and learning; research; and service/community engagement) and whose contributions have proven to be catalytic and/or transformative to the Faculty of Arts.
The award is given in the name of a living Professor Emeritus/Emerita who has made a significant contribution to the Faculty of Arts and who has inspired the Dean of Arts Award recipient. The Professor Emeritus for Dr. Nadel’s award is Dr. Nancy Gallini, former Dean of the Faculty of Arts.
Ira Nadel has published biographies of Leonard Cohen, Tom Stoppard, David Mamet and Leon Uris. His critical books include Biography, Fiction Fact & Form, Joyce and the Jews, Modernism’s Second Act and The Cambridge Introduction to Ezra Pound. He has also edited Ezra Pound’s Letters to Alice Corbin, the Cambridge Companion to Ezra Pound and Ezra Pound in Context. Forthcoming is a critical biography of Philip Roth and for the MLA, Teaching Approaches to Ezra Pound’s Poetry and Prose, co-edited with Demetres Tryphonopoulos. His essay on David Bowie, Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen will appear in 2021. He has lectured in Canada, the U.S., England, France, Italy, Germany, Israel, Russia, Australia and China. In 1996, he won the UBC Medal for Biography. He is a UBC Distinguished University Scholar and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
