In celebration of International Women’s Day on 8 March, students in Professor Mary Chapman’s ENGL 490 hosted a Feminist Parade and other events.
Students and faculty participated in the march with some donning costumes of prominent feminist figures like “Emma Gonzalez,” “Mabel Pinghua Lee,” “Ruth Bader Ginsburg” among others. The parade was accompanied by the Thunderbirds Marching Band.
Professor Chapman’s section of ENGL 490 focuses on US Suffrage literature, and investigates the aesthetically innovative, rhetorically compelling, and entertaining print culture produced by young American suffragists. In addition to the parade, the ENGL 490 students organized a quiz show, and curated an exhibit on the works of Jessie Tarbox Beals, a Canadian photographer who was one of the first women in the United States to have a career as a photojournalist.
