The plague has closed theatres. Queen Elizabeth is on the throne. Blank verse drama is wildly popular. Is it the 16th century? No, it’s 2021! The Tragedy of Irene is a new verse play by UBC English Honours student and playwright Kyara Hunter. The play twists around the glittering, devastating court of Irene, Empress of Byzantium, as she struggles for power against her son Constantine, and Petrus, a discontented general. Historically set, Irene explores issues of family, female empowerment, and moral and political instability applicable to the present day. How far will Irene go, and what will be left? Join us on Thursday, March 4th or Sunday, March 7th to find out! We hope you’ll be Empressed!
